Practically everyone who knew her called her Miss Lola, including her husband....
He was seven years older than she; and when they married, he brought her to the farm. And so began the relationship.
Now most of you will think that I am referring to the long-lasting relationship between Miss Lola and her husband, Mr. Clingman. That thinking will be incorrect.
I am talking about the relationship with the land itself. I am talking about being a Southerner and farming the land. I am talking about something so palpable that, if you are quiet enough, you can hear the heartbeat of it. And in this family's case, I am talking about a bond so strong that it has lasted for more than a hundred years.
